A Central Fish Market is under construction in Nabadwip, Ward No. 17, located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Nadia district. This market will provide a central location for both wholesale and retail fish sales, designed to support local fishermen, fish traders, and consumers. The initiative is part of a larger plan to improve the fish trade infrastructure in the region and streamline the process of buying and selling fish.
The project has been allocated a budget of approximately 2.85 crore rupees and will cover an area of 1457.14 square meters. The market will feature modern facilities, including central refrigeration units to preserve the fish. These cold storage systems will ensure that fish remains fresh for longer periods, addressing a common challenge in fish trade. The market will consist of three blocks to accommodate various functions related to fish sales and vendor services.
The first block will house 40 shops for fish vendors, each providing a dedicated space for retail fish sales. The second block will be equipped with cold storage facilities to preserve fish, a bicycle garage for vendors and customers, a canteen, a power room, and a community hall for fishermen. This community hall will offer a space for the fishermen to gather, meet, and access any necessary support or services. The third block will contain separate restrooms for men and women, alongside other infrastructure such as parking areas and pathways for ease of movement within the market.
The market’s location on the banks of the Bhagirathi River is expected to benefit local fishermen, as it will serve as a central point for selling their catch. Previously, fishermen faced challenges in obtaining fair prices for their fish, often having to sell at local markets with limited access to larger customer bases. With the opening of the Central Fish Market, fishermen are expected to gain access to a larger pool of buyers, increasing their chances of securing better prices for their catch. The market will also provide a centralized platform for consumers, allowing them to purchase fish from a variety of vendors in one location.
The construction of the Central Fish Market has been ongoing for approximately six months. The market is nearing completion, with plans for it to be operational in the near future. This market is expected to support the local fish trade by offering better infrastructure for both sellers and buyers, increasing the efficiency of the fish distribution system, and improving the availability of fresh fish in the region. Once operational, it will become a key facility for the local economy, directly benefiting fishermen, vendors, and the wider community.
